An Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion in the Catholic Church is, under the Code of Canon Law, "an acolyte, or another of Christ's faithful deputed", in certain circumstances, to distribute Holy Communion.
The term "extraordinary" distinguishes such a person from the ordinary (normal, regular) minister of Holy Communion, namely a bishop, priest or deacon.
Where there are insufficient numbers of priests and deacons to distribute the Eucharist, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion can be commissioned by the Archbishop to help to serve the church in this capacity. Only those that distinguish themselves by their Christian life, faith and morals can become an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion (EMHC).
The process to become an EMHC involves filling out an EMHC application and submitting the application to our pastor for approval. Once the application is approved, the applicant attends an Archdiocesan Workshop. Attendance at this workshop is required before a person can be delegated by the Archbishop to serve as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion at Divine Mercy Parish.
An approved EMHC at Divine Mercy Parish is commissioned to distribute Holy Communion to one or more of the following:
Chateau Living Center
Homebound parishioners of Divine Mercy Parish
Inspired Living at Kenner
Mass
Nouveau Marc
Ochsner Hospital Kenner
Depending on where a minister wants to serve, individualized training by current ministers will be given.
It is a great honor and privilege to serve the parish as an EMHC.
If you are interested in becoming an EMHC, please contact Frank and Jude Raab whose contact information can be found in the tab to the right marked "Contact Information".
