The Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke        (22:14-23:56)

N.    When the hour came, Jesus took his place at the table with the apostles. He said to them,

J.    I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer, for, I tell you, I shall not eat it again until there is fulfillment in the kingdom of God.

N.    Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and said,

J.    Take this and share it among yourselves; for I tell you that from this time on I shall not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes. 

N.    Then he took the bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them, saying,

J.    This is my body, which will be given for you; do this in memory of me.

N.    And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying,

J.    This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which will be shed for you.
And yet behold, the hand of the one who is to betray me is with me on the table; for the Son of Man indeed goes as it has been determined; but woe to that man by whom he is betrayed.

N.    And they began to debate among themselves who among them would do such a deed.
Then an argument broke out among them about which of them should be regarded as the greatest. He said to them,

J.    The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them and those in authority over them are addressed as “Benefactors” but among you it shall not be so. Rather, let the greatest among you be as the youngest, and the leader as a servant. For who is greater: the one seated at table or the one who serves? Is it not the one seated at table? I am among you as the one who serves. It is you who have stood by me in my trials; and I confer a kingdom on you, just as my Father has conferred one on me, that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom; and you will sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

Simon, Simon! Behold Satan has demanded to sift all of you like wheat, but I have prayed that your own faith may not fail; and once you have turned back, you must strengthen your brothers. 

N.    He said to him,

P.    Lord, I am prepared to go to prison and to die with you.

N.    But he replied,

J.    I tell you, Peter, before the cock crows this day, you will deny three times that you know me.

N.    He said to them,

J.    When I sent you forth without a money bag or a sack or sandals, were you in need of anything?

C.    No, nothing,

N.    They replied.
He said to them,

J.    But now one who has a money bag should take it, and likewise a sack, and one who does not have a sword should sell his cloak and buy one. For I tell you that this scripture must be fulfilled in me, namely, He was counted among the wicked; and indeed what is written about me is coming to fulfillment.

N.    Then they said,

C.    Lord, look, there are two swords here.

N.    But he replied,

J.    It is enough!

N.    Then going out, he went, as was his custom, to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed him. When he arrived at the place he said to them,

J.    Pray that you may not undergo the test.

N.    After withdrawing about a stone throw from them and kneeling down, he prayed, saying,

J.    Father, if you are willing, take this cup away from me; still, not my will but yours be done.

N.    And to strengthen him an angel from heaven appeared to him. He was in such agony and he prayed so fervently that his sweat became like drops of blood falling on the ground. When he rose from prayer and returned to his disciples, he found them sleeping from grief. He said to them,

J.    Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray that you may not undergo the test.

N.    While he was still speaking, a crowd approached and in front was one of the Twelve, a man named Judas. He went up to Jesus to kiss him. Jesus said to him,

J.    Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?

N.    His disciples realized what was about to happen, and they asked,

C.    Lord, shall we strike with a sword?

N.    And one of them struck the high priest’s servant and cut off his right ear. But Jesus said in reply,

J.    Stop, no more of this!

N.    Then he touched the servant’s ear and healed him. And Jesus said to the chief priests and temple guards and elders who had come for him,

J.    Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs? Day after day I was with you in the temple area, and you did not seize me; but this is your hour, the time for the power of darkness.

N.    After arresting him they led him away and took him into the house of the high priest; Peter was following at a distance. They lit a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat around it, and Peter sat down with them. When a maid saw him seated in the light, she looked intently at him and said,

C.    This man too was with him.

N.    But he denied it saying,

P.    Woman, I do not know him.

N.    A short while later someone else saw him and said,

c.    You too are one of them.

N.    But Peter answered, 

P.    My friend, I am not.

N.    About an hour later, still another insisted,

C.    Assuredly, this man too was with him, for he also is a Galilean.

N.    But Peter said,

P.    My friend, I do not know what you are talking about.

N.    Just as he was saying this, the cock crowed, and the Lord turned and looked at Peter; and Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said to him, “Before the cock crows today, you will deny me three times.” He went out and began to weep bitterly.

N.    The men who held Jesus in custody were ridiculing and beating him. They blindfolded him and questioned him, saying,

C.    Prophesy! Who is it that struck you?

N.    And they reviled him in saying many other things against him.
When day came the council of elders of the people met, both chief priests and scribes, and they brought him before their Sanhedrin. They said,

C.    If you are the Christ, tell us.

N.    But he replied to them,

J.    If I tell you, you will not believe, and if I question, you will not respond. But from this time on the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God.

N.    They all asked,

C.    Are you then the son of God?

N.    He replied to them,

J.    You say that I am.

N.    Then they said,

C.    What further need have we for testimony? We have heard it from his own mouth.

N.    Then the whole assembly arose and brought Jesus before Pilate. They brought charges against him, saying,

C.    We found this man misleading our people; he opposes the payment of taxes to Caesar and maintains that he is the Christ, a king.

N.    Pilate asked him,

P.    Are you the king of the Jews?

J.    You say so.

N.    Pilate then addressed the chief priests and the crowds,

P.    I find this man not guilty.

N.    But they were adamant and said,

C.    He is inciting the people with his teaching throughout all Judea, from Galilee where he began even to here.

N.    On hearing this, Pilate asked if the man was a Galilean; and upon learning that he was under Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who was in Jerusalem at that time. Herod was very glad to see Jesus; he had been wanting to see him for a long time, for he had heard about him and been hoping to see him perform some sign. He questioned him at length, but he gave no answer.
The chief priests and scribes, meanwhile, stood by accusing him harshly. Herod and his soldiers treated him contemptuously and mocked him, and after clothing him in resplendent garb, he sent him back to Pilate. Herod and Pilate became friends that very day, even though they had been enemies formerly.
Pilate then summoned the chief priests, the rulers, and the people and said to them,

P.    You brought this man to me and accused him of inciting the people to revolt. I have conducted my investigation in your presence and have not found this man guilty of the charges you have brought against him, nor did Herod, for he sent him back to us. So no capital crime has been committed by him. Therefore I shall have him flogged and then release him.

N.    But all together they shouted out,

C.    Away with this man! Release Barabbas to us.

N.    Now Barabbas had been imprisoned for a rebellion that had taken place in the city and for murder. Again Pilate addressed them, still wishing to release Jesus, but they continued their shouting,

C.    Crucify him! Crucify him!

N.    Pilate addressed them a third time,

P.    What evil has this man done? I found him guilty of no capital crime. Therefore I shall have him flogged and then release him.

N.    With loud shouts, however, they persisted in calling for his crucifixion, and their voices prevailed. The verdict of Pilate was that their demand should be granted. So he released the man who had been imprisoned for rebellion and murder, for whom they asked, and he handed Jesus over to them to deal with as they wished. As they led him away they took hold of a certain Simon, a Cyrenean, who was coming in from the country; and after laying the cross on him, they made him carry it behind Jesus. A large crowd of people followed Jesus, including many women who mourned and lamented him. Jesus turned to them and said,

J.    Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep instead for yourselves and for your children. For indeed, the days are coming when people will say, “Blessed are the barren, the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed.” At that time people will say to the mountains, “Fall on us!” and to the hills, “Cover us!” For if these things are done when the wood is green what will happen when it is dry?

N.    Now two others, both criminals, were led away with him to be executed. When they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified him and the criminals there, one on his right, the other on his left. Then Jesus said,

J.    Father, forgive them, they know not what they do.

N.    They divided his garments by casting lots. The people stood by and watched; the rulers, meanwhile, sneered at him and said,

C.    He saved others, let him save himself if he is the chosen one, the Christ of God.

N.    Even the soldiers jeered at him. As they approached to offer him wine they called out,

C.    If you are King of the Jews, save yourself.

N.    Above him there was an inscription that read, “This is the King of the Jews.” Now one of the criminals hanging there reviled Jesus, saying,

P.    Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us.

N.    The other, however, rebuking him, said in reply,

P.    Have you no fear of God, for you are subject to the same condemnation? And indeed, we have been condemned justly, for the sentence we received corresponds to our crimes, but this man has done nothing criminal.

N.    Then he said,

P.    Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.

N.    He replied to him,

J.    Amen, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.

N.    It was now about noon and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon because of an eclipse of the sun. Then the veil of the temple was torn down the middle. Jesus cried out in a loud voice, 

J.    Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.

N.    And when he had said this he breathed his last.

(Here all kneel and pause for a short time.)

N.    The centurion who witnessed what had happened glorified God and said,

P.    This man was innocent beyond doubt.

N.    When all the people who had gathered for this spectacle saw what had happened, they returned home beating their breasts; but all his acquaintances stood at a distance, including the women who had followed him from Galilee and saw these events.
Now there was a virtuous and righteous man named Joseph who, though he was a member of the council, had not consented to their plan of action. He came from the Jewish town of Arimathea and was awaiting the kingdom of God. He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. After he had taken the body down, he wrapped it in a linen cloth and laid him in a rock-hewn tomb in which no one had yet been buried. It was the day of Preparation, and the sabbath was about to begin. The women who had come from Galilee with him followed behind, and when they had seen the tomb and the way in which his body was laid in it, they returned and prepared spices and perfumed oils. Then they rested on the sabbath according to the commandment. —The Gospel of the Lord.

C. Llegada la hora, Jesús se sentó a la mesa con los Apóstoles y les dijo:

✠ He deseado ardientemente comer esta Pascua con ustedes antes de mi Pasión, porque les aseguro que ya no la comeré más hasta que llegue a su pleno cumplimiento en el Reino de Dios.

C. Y tomando una copa, dio gracias y dijo:

✠ Tomen y compártanla entre ustedes. Porque les aseguro que desde ahora no beberé más del fruto de la vid hasta que llegue el Reino de Dios.

C.  Luego tomó el pan, dio gracias, lo partió y lo dio a sus discípulos, diciendo:

✠ Esto es mi Cuerpo, que se entrega por ustedes. Hagan esto en memoria mía.

C. Después de la cena hizo lo mismo con la copa, diciendo:

✠ Esta copa es la Nueva Alianza sellada con mi Sangre, que se derrama por ustedes. Pero miren, la mano del traidor está sobre la mesa, junto a mí. Porque el Hijo del hombre va por el camino que le ha sido señalado, pero ¡ay de aquel que lo va a entregar!

C. Entonces comenzaron a preguntarse unos a otros quién de ellos sería el que iba a hacer eso. Y surgió una discusión sobre quién debía ser considerado como el más grande. Jesús les dijo:

✠ Los reyes de las naciones dominan sobre ellas, y los que ejercen el poder sobre el pueblo se hacen llamar bienhechores. Pero entre ustedes no debe ser así. Al contrario, el que es más grande, que se comporte como el menor, y el que gobierna, como un servidor. Porque, ¿quién es más grande, el que está a la mesa o el que sirve? ¿No es acaso el que está a la mesa? Y sin embargo, yo estoy entre ustedes como el que sirve.

Ustedes son los que han permanecido siempre conmigo en medio de mis pruebas. Por eso yo les confiero la realeza, como mi Padre me la confirió a mí. Y en mi Reino, ustedes comerán y beberán en mi mesa, y se sentarán sobre tronos para juzgar a las doce tribus de Israel.

Simón, Simón, mira que Satanás ha pedido poder para zarandearlos como el trigo, pero yo he rogado por ti, para que no te falte la fe. Y tú, después que hayas vuelto, confirma a tus hermanos.»

C. Pedro le dijo:

S. Señor, estoy dispuesto a ir contigo a la cárcel y a la muerte.

C. Pero Jesús replicó:

✠ Yo te aseguro, Pedro, que hoy, antes que cante el gallo, habrás negado tres veces que me conoces.

C. Después les dijo:

✠ Cuando los envié sin bolsa, ni alforja, ni sandalia, ¿les faltó alguna cosa?

C. Respondieron:

S. Nada

C. El agregó:

✠ Pero ahora el que tenga una bolsa, que la lleve; el que tenga una alforja, que la lleve también; y el que no tenga espada, que venda su manto para comprar una. Porque les aseguro que debe cumplirse en mí esta palabra de la Escritura: Fue contado entre los malhechores. Ya llega a su fin todo lo que se refiere a mí.

C. Ellos le dijeron:

S. Señor, aquí hay dos espadas.

C. El les respondió:

✠ Basta!

C. En seguida Jesús salió y fue como de costumbre al monte de los Olivos, seguido de sus discípulos. Cuando llegaron, les dijo:

✠ Oren, para no caer en la tentación.

C. Después se alejó de ellos, más o menos a la distancia de un tiro de piedra, y puesto de rodillas, oraba:

✠ Padre, si quieres, aleja de mí este cáliz. Pero que no se haga mi voluntad, sino la tuya.

C. Entonces se le apareció un ángel del cielo que lo reconfortaba. En medio de la angustia, Él oraba más intensamente, y su sudor era como gotas de sangre que corrían hasta el suelo. Después de orar se levantó, fue hacia donde estaban sus discípulos y los encontró adormecidos por la tristeza. Jesús les dijo:

✠ ¿Por qué están durmiendo? Levántense y oren para no caer en la tentación.

C. Todavía estaba hablando, cuando llegó una multitud encabezada por el que se llamaba Judas, uno de los Doce. Este se acercó a Jesús para besarlo. Jesús le dijo:

✠ Judas, ¿con un beso entregas al Hijo del hombre?

C. Los que estaban con Jesús, viendo lo que iba a suceder, le preguntaron:

S. Señor, ¿usamos la espada?

C.  Y uno de ellos hirió con su espada al servidor del Sumo Sacerdote, cortándole la oreja derecha. Pero Jesús dijo:

✠ Dejen, ya está.

C. Y tocándole la oreja, lo curó. Después dijo a los sumos sacerdotes, a los jefes de la guardia del Templo y a los ancianos que habían venido a arrestarlo:

✠ ¿Soy acaso un ladrón para que vengan con espadas y palos? Todos los días estaba con ustedes en el Templo y no me arrestaron. Pero esta es la hora de ustedes y el poder de las tinieblas.

C.  Después de arrestarlo, lo condujeron a la casa del Sumo Sacerdote. Pedro lo seguía de lejos. Encendieron fuego en medio del patio, se sentaron alrededor de él y Pedro se sentó entre ellos. Una sirvienta que lo vio junto al fuego, lo miró fijamente y dijo:

S. Este también estaba con Él.

C.  Pedro lo negó diciendo:

S. Mujer, no lo conozco.

C. Poco después, otro lo vio y dijo:

S. Tú también eres uno de aquellos.

C.  Pero Pedro respondió:

S. No, hombre, no lo soy.

C. Alrededor de una hora más tarde, otro insistió, diciendo:

S. No hay duda de que este hombre estaba con él; además, él también es galileo.

C. Dijo Pedro:

S. Hombre, no sé lo que dices.

C. En ese momento, cuando todavía estaba hablando, cantó el gallo. El Señor, dándose vuelta, miró a Pedro. Este recordó las palabras que el Señor le había dicho: «Hoy, antes que cante el gallo, me habrás negado tres veces.» Y saliendo afuera, lloró amargamente.

C. Los hombres que custodiaban a Jesús lo ultrajaban y lo golpeaban; y tapándole el rostro, le decían:

S. Profetiza, ¿quién te golpeó?

C. Y proferían contra Él toda clase de insultos.

C. Cuando amaneció, se reunió el Consejo de los ancianos del pueblo, junto con los sumos sacerdotes y los escribas. Llevaron a Jesús ante el tribunal y le dijeron:

S. Dinos si eres el Mesías.

C. Él les dijo:

✠ Si yo les respondo, ustedes no me creerán, y si los interrogo, no me responderán. Pero en adelante, el Hijo del hombre se sentará a la derecha de Dios todopoderoso.

C.  Todos preguntaron:

S. ¿Entonces eres el Hijo de Dios?

C.  Jesús respondió:

✠ Tienen razón, yo lo soy.

C.  Ellos dijeron:

S. ¿Acaso necesitamos otro testimonio? Nosotros mismos lo hemos oído de su propia boca.

C.  Después se levantó toda la asamblea y lo llevaron ante Pilato.

C. Y comenzaron a acusarlo, diciendo:

S. Hemos encontrado a este hombre incitando a nuestro pueblo a la rebelión, impidiéndole pagar los impuestos al Emperador y pretendiendo ser el rey Mesías.

C. Pilato lo interrogó, diciendo:

S. ¿Eres Tú el rey de los judíos?

✠ Tú lo dices.

C.  Le respondió Jesús. Pilato dijo a los sumos sacerdotes y a la multitud:

S. No encuentro en este hombre ningún motivo de condena.

C.  Pero ellos insistían:

S. Subleva al pueblo con su enseñanza en toda la Judea. Comenzó en Galilea y ha llegado hasta aquí.

C.  Al oír esto, Pilato preguntó si ese hombre era galileo. Y habiéndose asegurado de que pertenecía a la jurisdicción de Herodes, se lo envió. En esos días, también Herodes se encontraba en Jerusalén.

C.  Herodes se alegró mucho al ver a Jesús. Hacía tiempo que deseaba verlo, por lo que había oído decir de Él, y esperaba que hiciera algún prodigio en su presencia. Le hizo muchas preguntas, pero Jesús no le respondió nada. Entre tanto, los sumos sacerdotes y los escribas estaban allí y lo acusaban con vehemencia. Herodes y sus guardias, después de tratarlo con desprecio y ponerlo en ridículo, lo cubrieron con un magnífico manto y lo enviaron de nuevo a Pilato. Y ese mismo día, Herodes y Pilato, que estaban enemistados, se hicieron amigos.

C.  Pilato convocó a los sumos sacerdotes, a los jefes y al pueblo, y les dijo:

S. Ustedes me han traído a este hombre, acusándolo de incitar al pueblo a la rebelión. Pero yo lo interrogué delante de ustedes y no encontré ningún motivo de condena en los cargos de que lo acusan; ni tampoco Herodes, ya que él lo ha devuelto a este tribunal. Como ven, este hombre no ha hecho nada que merezca la muerte. Después de darle un escarmiento, lo dejaré en libertad.

C.  Pero la multitud comenzó a gritar:

S. ¡Qué muera este hombre! ¡Suéltanos a Barrabás!

C. A Barrabás lo habían encarcelado por una sedición que tuvo lugar en la ciudad y por homicidio. Pilato volvió a dirigirles la palabra con la intención de poner en libertad a Jesús. Pero ellos seguían gritando:

S. ¡Crucifícalo! ¡Crucifícalo!

C. Por tercera vez les dijo:

S. ¿Qué mal ha hecho este hombre? No encuentro en Él nada que merezca la muerte. Después de darle un escarmiento, lo dejaré en libertad.

C.  Pero ellos insistían a gritos, reclamando que fuera crucificado, y el griterío se hacía cada vez más violento. Al fin, Pilato resolvió acceder al pedido del pueblo. Dejó en libertad al que ellos pedían, al que había sido encarcelado por sedición y homicidio, y a Jesús lo entregó al arbitrio de ellos.

C.  Cuando lo llevaban, detuvieron a un tal Simón de Cirene, que volvía del campo, y lo cargaron con la cruz, para que la llevara detrás de Jesús. Lo seguían muchos del pueblo y un buen número de mujeres, que se golpeaban el pecho y se lamentaban por él. Pero Jesús, volviéndose hacia ellas, les dijo:

✠ ¡Hijas de Jerusalén!, no lloren por mí; lloren más bien por ustedes y por sus hijos. Porque se acerca el tiempo en que se dirá: ¡Felices las estériles, felices los senos que no concibieron y los pechos que no amamantaron! Entonces se dirá a las montañas: ¡Caigan sobre nosotros!, y a los cerros: ¡Sepúltennos! Porque si así tratan a la leña verde, ¿qué será de la leña seca?

C.  Con él llevaban también a otros dos malhechores, para ser ejecutados.

C. Cuando llegaron al lugar llamado «La Calavera», lo crucificaron junto con los malhechores, uno a su derecha y el otro a su izquierda. Jesús decía:

✠ Padre, perdónalos, porque no saben lo que hacen.

C.  Después se repartieron sus vestiduras, sorteándolas entre ellos.

C.  El pueblo permanecía allí y miraba. Sus jefes, burlándose, decían:

S. Ha salvado a otros: ¡que se salve a sí mismo, si es el Mesías de Dios, el Elegido!

C. También los soldados se burlaban de Él y, acercándose para ofrecerle vinagre, le decían:

S. Si eres el rey de los judíos, ¡sálvate a ti mismo!

C.  Sobre su cabeza había una inscripción: «Éste es el rey de los judíos.»

C.  Uno de los malhechores crucificados lo insultaba, diciendo:

S. ¿No eres tú el Mesías? Sálvate a ti mismo y a nosotros.

C.  Pero el otro lo increpaba, diciéndole: «¿No tienes temor de Dios, tú que sufres la misma pena que él? Nosotros la sufrimos justamente, porque pagamos nuestras culpas, pero Él no ha hecho nada malo.»

C.  Y decía:

S. Jesús, acuérdate de mí cuando vengas a establecer tu Reino.

C.  Él le respondió:

✠ Yo te aseguro que hoy estarás conmigo en el Paraíso.

C.  Era alrededor del mediodía. El sol se eclipsó y la oscuridad cubrió toda la tierra hasta las tres de la tarde. El velo del Templo se rasgó por el medio. Jesús, con un grito, exclamó:

✠ Padre, en tus manos encomiendo mi espíritu.

C.  Y diciendo esto, expiró.

Aquí todos se arrodillan, y se hace un breve silencio de adoración.

C.  Cuando el centurión vio lo que había pasado, alabó a Dios, exclamando:

S. Realmente este hombre era un justo.

C.  Y la multitud que se había reunido para contemplar el espectáculo, al ver lo sucedido, regresaba golpeándose el pecho. Todos sus amigos y las mujeres que lo habían acompañado desde Galilea permanecían a distancia, contemplando lo sucedido.

C. Llegó entonces un miembro del Consejo, llamado José, hombre recto y justo, que no estaba de acuerdo con las decisiones y actitudes de los demás. Era de Arimatea, ciudad de Judea, y esperaba el Reino de Dios. Fue a ver a Pilato para pedirle el cuerpo de Jesús. Después de bajarlo de la cruz, lo envolvió en una sábana y lo colocó en un sepulcro cavado en la roca, donde nadie había sido sepultado.

Era el día de la Preparación, y ya comenzaba el sábado. Las mujeres que habían venido de Galilea con Jesús siguieron a José, observaron
el sepulcro y vieron cómo había sido sepultado. Después regresaron y prepararon los bálsamos y perfumes, pero el sábado observaron el descanso que prescribía la Ley.
