We are collecting funds to cover the already purchased specialty yarn that is used by the wig makers. Since their specific yarn had to be special ordered we are unable to accept yarn skein donations. We would be grateful for any monetary donation to cover the expenses of the specialty skeins that were ordered for our Lenten Service Project.
We wanted to provide the Parish with an update on our 2022 Lenten Service Project to partner with the Magic Yarn Project, and purchase and precut the yarn needed to create 500 wigs for children battling cancer.
On March 16th we had our first Yarn Party in the Parish Community Center and over 30 Parishioners showed up and were absolutely committed to the task at hand. They arrived with their scissors, measuring tapes, and unbelievable energy to take on the process of creating the precut yarn needed for 5 wig designs - Rapunzel, Elsa, Ariel, Jasmine, and Belle.
During the 2-hour party, the team learned the process, refined their skill, and were able to produce 150 Ziploc bags of precut strands of yarn. With a goal for this project to create 500 bags, we are at 30% to the goal after our first day and we still have 3 more parties to go. Wow!! What a great start!!
On behalf of Father Cooper and Maria Sotomayer, thanks to the team that participated this week to give their time to this service project. We are just beginning this effort and there is still time for you to get involved. As stated, there are 3 more Yarn Parties 3/30, 4/2, and 4/3 where you can become a yarn wrapping expert. If you are unable to attend, please consider providing a donation to help us purchase the yarn and other supplies needed for the project. The last way you can support this effort is to keep this Service Project and all the children that we are helping in your daily prayers.
When we love, we act; we comfort; we help; we show we care.
God Bless!
" Not so long ago, two moms started a project to make a few dozen princess yarn wigs for young girls battling cancer. They had no idea that within a few short years, their little service project would blossom into a volunteer-powered movement, reaching tens of thousands of families around the globe. Chemotherapy treatments often leave young scalps too sensitive for scratchy traditional wigs, but yarn wigs are comfy, soft, and warm. Magic Yarn wigs are inspired by beloved Disney characters and invite children back to the world of play and daydreaming. They are a beacon of fun, laughter, and imagination during a scary time.
"Due to the popularity of these wigs, The Magic Yarn Project was born, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. Since our founding, The Magic Yarn Project has received coverage by hundreds of internet media sources, magazines, and local news stations; shipped tens of thousands of wigs to every state and over 50 countries; and organized over 120,000 hours of volunteer service. And the demand for magic grows daily! Every year, roughly 300,000 children are diagnosed with cancer worldwide (including over 15,000 in the US). Our ever-growing organization is funded solely by donations, and we are entirely volunteer powered."
Dear Parishioners and Friends of Divine Mercy Parish,
How do people know we love them? When we love, we act; we comfort; we help; we show we care. We redouble our efforts during Lent, in a very focused way, in order to develop our spiritual stamina for living our faith well throughout the year. This is how we show both Jesus and our neighbor we love them. During this holy season of Lent, we continue our work for those who are sick and suffering, for those who need to experience the love and kindness of a simple act of love. Our 2022 Lenten Service Project is not about giving things up but about bringing joy and happiness to the lives of children and their families.
This year we are partnering with the Magic Yarn Project to provide whimsical, giggle-inducing character wigs and beanies to children who are battling cancer. These wigs and beanies invite children back into the world of imagination and play during a very difficult battle. The Magic Yarn Project has partnered with dozens of hospitals and nonprofits serving medically fragile kids all over the globe, from Walt Disney World to the Ukraine. They have sent over 30,000 wigs to all 50 states and over 52 countries with zero cost to children’s families.
As our 2022 Lenten Service Project, Divine Mercy Parish has committed to purchase and precut the yarn needed to create 500 wigs for children battling cancer. Chemotherapy treatments often leave young scalps too sensitive for traditional wigs, but yarn wigs are comfy, soft, and warm. They are a beacon of fun, laughter, and imagination during a frightening time. The demand for magic wigs grows daily! Every year, roughly 300,000 children are diagnosed with cancer worldwide (including over 15,000 in the US). Thank you for your monetary donations so that we may be the heart and hands of Jesus to children and families in their time of need.
